Making the responsible decision to stop driving (or having the decision made for us) can be a severe blow to our independence.  Transportation is a big issue for us on Hawai’i Island.

Fortunately, there is some help:

  • Gio Hawai’i Transportation offers NFB members discount taxi fares.  Please ask at the next meeting for details.

  •  We are working with RSVP to expand the Volunteer Driver and Blind Buddy program.  This program pairs the volunteer with a member for weekly shopping trips at a mutually agreeable day and time.

  •  In a settlement of a Federal ADA lawsuit, we will finally have paratransit service in the Hilo and Kona areas of Hawai’i County.  As of  July 1, 2016, Hele On Kako’o  is available. To qualify you must fill out an application, then call for an interview appointment.  There will be applications and information at the next meeting, or download here.
